I had in mind to capture the essence of being Amish in the face of this bust. I looked at a lot of photos and recalled my interaction with a few Amish people. They have a peace and grace about them that comes from their faith and from not getting caught up in worldly materialism. I’m sure it can be challenging to be Amish in a culture that values “stuff”.
Amish was made in terra cotta (water based clay). Once it was finished it was hollowed out and allowed to dry. Then it was fired and finished. I showed it first at the 1993 French Connection show. I sold two editions of it at that show. The mold was made immediately following the show and I had three editions made. I now am up to about 6 additions of this piece. They are all in private collections.
