The Lighthouse Piece

The Lighthouse Piece

This piece was finished just in time for the Jamestown Arts Center Members’ Show in November of 2016. My intention for this piece was to use different materials and forms to create a natural tension both literally and figuratively that worked together as a whole. It’s less intentional that it ended up looking much like a lighthouse, but that seemed as good a name as any for it. The Lighthouse Piece can be purchased by inquiring through this website.

The height of this work is 24” and the base is 8.5” square. The base and top carving are black walnut. Another black walnut piece is found just under the steel disc near the top. There are two wheel-thrown ceramic pieces including the main red section. The exterior skeleton is made of welded steel. Disciplines used in creating this piece are wheel-thrown ceramics, wood construction, wood carving, welding and mechanical fastening. Such dissimilar materials can usually only be joined by some type of glue or adhesive. In this case there is a singular threaded steel rod that is tensioned at the bottom and top with nuts. No glue or adhesives were used.
